The question often arises as to why Ukraine remains as one of the last countries in the region without a golf project. Russia, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and even Moldova already have one or more golf courses. In actuality, these countries combined have a total of some 61 golf courses while Ukraine, which has the best land and the biggest golf tourism potential, has none.

Spring is just about here, but it looks like golf will yet again have to wait another season to take hold in Ukraine. But the game that was founded by a bunch of Scots pottering around St. Andrews is more than a mere pastime today. Golf is the grease in face-to-face meetings and deal-cutting at the highest level - precisely because it allows you to quietly potter around in the fresh air rather than sitting in a stifling conference room.

What makes golf such a difficult and seemingly unattainable undertaking for a country like Ukraine? Tiny Czech Republic will be building its 28th course where a few years ago there were none. Slovakia will soon have 6. Poland now has almost 2 dozen courses. Austria, which has a fraction of the available land of Ukraine, is said to have over 120 golf courses. Even countries like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan now have golf courses. Russia is well on its way to having 6 golf courses and resorts.

Walter Prochorenko is a Ukrainan-American golfing enthusiast with a serious handicap - he's stuck in the very middle of a country which is totally devoid of golf courses! As General Director of the Golden Gate Golf Club project, it's a problem he is attemp to resolve. He's not the only one either. There are a number of project currently under way which are geared at building golf courses in and around Kyiv.

His innate optimism survived twenty years in the tropics and living in Communist Bulgaria and Soviet Ukraine. He worked on the Fiji islands, in Tanzania and on Curacao in the Carribbean. In fact, Mr. Touwen enjoys the memories.
