Turfgrass surfaces absorb harsh sounds significantly better than hard surfaces such as gravel, pavement or bare ground.20 Undesirable noise levels may be reduced by as much as 20 to 30%. One study showed that bluegrass absorbed sound better than a heavy carpet on a felt pad. Turfgrass also reduces glare. Buildings, concrete and glass all reflect light as glare. A grassy surface reflects light multidirectionally, diffusing its intensity.

These benefits are most significant when turfgrasses, trees and shrubs are integrated into a landscape, such as that commonly found around homes or on a golf course.
